Our Whole Lives

Our Whole Lives (OWL) is a medically accurate, age-appropriate, comprehensive sexuality program. The curriculum was co-written by the Unitarian Universalist Association and United Church of Christ (UCC). Its premise is simple: everyone is sexual, from birth to death, and diversity in sexuality is normal.

OWL supports children and youth in developing healthy, respectful attitudes toward themselves, their bodies, relationships, and sexuality. It is grounded in UU teachings such as respect for diversity, compassion, justice, and personal responsibility. TUUC is committed to providing a safe, inclusive space for participants to explore these important topics.

OWL Quick Points

TUUC currently rotates to which grades it offers OWL, depending on the children’s needs. Registration and a parent orientation are required, as well as a commitment for participants to attend each session. Classes are held at TUUC and are offered for free.

Our Next Class:

This page will be updated as soon as the next session is scheduled. OWL is generally taught during Sunday morning YRE, as the curriculum is required to be taught in person.

Why TUUC Offers OWL:

TUUC is proud to offer the OWL program. It is rooted in our principles of respect for all people, promoting consent, healthy relationships, gender equality, and the celebration of diversity. By offering OWL, we nurture children and teens who can approach sexuality with a sense of self-worth, respect for others, and responsibility.

Why Parents Should Sign Their Children Up:

  1. Age-Appropriate, Comprehensive Education: OWL covers a range of topics in an age-appropriate way. It provides children and teens with the tools they need to navigate their growing bodies, emotions, and relationships in a healthy way.

  2. Promotes Healthy Relationships: OWL teaches important skills like consent, communication, and respect for boundaries.

  3. Builds Confidence and Self-Respect: OWL helps children and teens develop a positive sense of self and body image.

  4. Inclusive and Respectful of Diversity: OWL is inclusive of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and family structures, helping children and teens respect diversity and encouraging inclusivity and acceptance.

  5. Fosters Open Communication: With OWL, families have a foundation for ongoing, honest dialogue that helps prevent confusion or embarrassment about sensitive topics..

We also provide a small group ministry specifically for parents of children participating in the OWL program. This supportive mini-class offers a space for parents to navigate challenging questions and reflect on personal feelings or experiences that OWL may bring to the surface. Guided by a facilitator and supported by the experiences of fellow parents, this program helps make the OWL journey a positive and enriching experience for the entire family.
