Spiritual Theme:  What Does It Mean To Be People Of Perseverance?

February 4

9:30 and 11:15 a.m.

Let's Band Together

Rev. Clare Petersberger, Dr. Neil Porter and other members of the TUUC Stewardship Team

Our spiritual question for February is "What does it mean to be a people of perseverance?"  A colleague writes, "That dominant myth of Sisyphus pushing his rock up that endless hill hasn't done us any favors.  We assume that Sisyphus is suffering because his work is endless, but maybe it's his isolation and lack of a place of rest that is his true torment...what a gift to remember that perseverance isn't a solo act."  Today, we celebrate that we do not have to go through life as a solo act but instead extend to one another the invitation, "Let's Band Together."  This morning we lift up the purposes for which we band together as a people of perseverance.

February 11

9:30 and 11:15 a.m.

To Surrender Like A Duck

Rev. Clare Petersberger

Marge Wheatley defines perseverance as "how we maintain our activity in spite of difficulties."  Who do you take as a paragon for maintaining activity in spite of difficulties?  What helps them to persevere?  What helps you to persevere when you are frightened of the unknown and need reassurance; when you are heartbroken and need love; when you are tired from showing up at marches for the same moral issues decade after decade?  And what do these questions have to do with surrendering like a duck?  In the 11:15 service, Senator Jim Brochin will briefly address perseverance in terms of the Bad Acts bill and the process of getting legislation passed.

What Makes Perseverance Possible?

Rev. Clare Petersberger, The TUUC Choir

February is often the season of grey snow in this part of the world.  Sometimes it is the season of grey in our souls, too.  Barbara Kingsolver writes, "In my own worst seasons, I've come back from the colorless world of despair by forcing myself to look hard, for a long time, at a single glorious thing:  a flame of red geranium outside my bedroom window.  And then another:  my daughter in a yellow dress.  And another:  the perfect outline of a full, dark sphere behind the crescent moon...until I learned to be in love with my life again."  What is the relationship between beauty and perseverance in your life?
